Eternal Concerns Of a GenY Mind

Generation Y Not

I'm part of a generation called « Y ». Famous generation usually known as impatient, unruly, disrespectful, eternally unsatisfied… A "manga-video games-Internet" generation that is largely cartooned by media and generally feared by employers. Why is that? What's wrong with us? Judging by the large amount of book existing on the topic, the whole concept of "generation Y" seems shrouded in mystery… Any curious person walking through the bookshelves of its favorite bookshop can find an hint of scientific, sociological, psychological, managerial (and that is not the half of it…) answer to this fascinating question: Who the hell is generation Y ?

The aim of this blog is therefore not to produce an other complicated aid to answer this question. If you're interested in this topic, you now know where to dig by yourself. This page will be a simple testimony of a certain state of mind, of aspirations and general look of a "GenY" young woman at the meandering world and Society… That will take some doing!
I will try to share here both of my professional and personal vision of the world.

At this point of the blog, it seems important to precise some things: my belonging to this GenY category, even though not being a fatality or an end in itself, will inevitably have an impact on this blog orientation. Indeed, my words and comments will obviously be tainted by codes, values and specific references proper to my generation. In a same way, my belonging to an occidental, European and French culture as well as my personal education (Mom if you read me…) will undoubtedly affect my perspectives too.

There will be no absolute truth in this page, no answer to the fundamental issues tormenting humanity. Only impressions, simple food for thought about contemporary topics and daily concerns.
Now that everyone’s warned, that the scene is set, we can finally start!

Let's have 5 minutes of fun (but no more than 5, don't forget my generation gets easily bored) with this whole concept of "Generation Y". Among the numerous theories existing, let's pick up the funniest ones that you probably won't find in the references of your bookstores.

Did you know that, according to some theories, the "Y" would come from the shape taken by the earphones of our mp3 on our chests? Some people even see in that "Y" a link with the youth's way of dressing, whose pants, wore way too large, would let accidently appear the mysterious letter …

Let us also take a closer look to the following image found in a social network well-known by the people of my kind which illustrates eminently our elders' thoughts:

"Generation Y" or the self-service generation, which throws objects and people as easily as it breathes. Outch… that hurts. There would be so many things to say about the human and ecological aspirations of my generation that I won't do it just right now. It will be the purpose of future articles to come.

Generation Y also means - of course-  "Generation Why", to be understood as generation which ask (way) too much questions, which constantly distrusts the established order, which always pushes the fixed boundaries to create its own. This attitude seems to be a real problem with regard to the Society… hard to understand why (generational distortion I guess). No matter what happens, the term "Generation Y" always suffers bad connotations. GenYs are looked as china dogs, as if our only existence would compromise the precious conventional order or break the millenary balance of things (we will also see, in a future post, how absurd this postulate is). How are we supposed to evolve in such an anti-changes Society with this target prominently displayed on our back?

The only way I found is to embrace this term, take it firmly, reclaim it and find a way to make fun of it.

I'm a GenY mind. I'm part of a generation that is not afraid to dare, to rise and do its best to change the world. Sounds megalomaniac ? Maybe... or maybe you have to be a GenY too to get this point of view... ?
